The Nigerian Legion is a statutory Body established by the Act of Parliament of 1964 amended by the Nigerian Legion Interim Management Decree 25 of 1977, and further amended by Nigerian Legion Decree No. 37 of 1988, with Federal Republic of Nigeria official Gazette No. 64 vol. 75 dated 30th September, 1988 as amended.
It is an offshoot of the armed forces, comprising the Army, Navy and Air force, established to cater for the welfare of the ex-service men who fought in the Wars that Nigeria had participated in, and to promote the spirit of comradeship among the living ex-service men and service personnel in the Military.
The Decree that established the Nigerian Legion (Decree No. 37 of 1988) empowers it to establish, manage, control and regulate the conduct and affairs of the Corps of Commissionaire or any other organization to Serve as an auxiliary arm of the Nigerian Legion.
The Nigerian Legion has the general function of promoting the welfare of ex-service men and Comradeship among ex-service men. It is empower establish, incorporate and operate limited liability companies with a view to carrying out profit making ventures. It is empowered as well to establish and operate commercial ventures, industries, estates and agro based business among others. .
The Corps of Commissionaire of the Nigerian Legion is an extension, an auxiliary arm and a security apparatus of the Nigerian Legion; established, managed and Controlled by the Nigerian Legion in accordance with its powers under sec. 4 of the Decree 37 of 1988. It is the biggest and the most vibrant undertaking of the Nigerian Legion across the Federation.
Members of the Corps of Commissionaire are associates members of the Nigerian Legion. They undergo three (3) months partial military and extensive security training in other to equip them with the qualities, characters and discipline that the Armed forces is reputed for. The Nigerian Legion is a member of the British Commonwealth League of Veterans and International World War Veterans Organization.
The Nigerian Legion is not a para military organization, it is an off-shoot of the Nigerian Armed Forces. And with the President of the Federal Republic of Nigerian as it Grand-Patron.
The Management of the affairs of the Nigerian Legion is vested on the National Council.
The Nigerian Legion is a government agency under Veterans Affairs Division (VAD) of the Ministry of Defence, Abuja.
The Annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day is the Legion's Major Event. It is a month long event starting from late November to culminate on January 15th.
